Avondale Golf Course is getting ready to host the 2012 P.E.I. Amateur Golf Championship . The Championship, which is sponsored by Island Coastal, is scheduled for July 7th and 8th .
The P.E.I. Amateur crowns provincial champions in six different divisions ; the Men’s and Women’s Amateur Champions , the Senior Men’s and Women’s Champions , the Men’s Mid-Amateur Champion as well as the Men’s Super Senior Champion . In addition to determining these Provincial Champions the tournament is also used to select players who will represent P.E.I. at National Championships such as the Canadian Senior Ladies Championship which is being held at the Belvedere Golf Club this August.
The Avondale Golf Course, designed by Jeff Fuller, is one of the best in the Maritimes . From the back tees the course measures over 6900 yards and its tight fairways and fast greens will test every aspect of a golfer’s game .
“ We are very excited to host the 2012 Amateur Championship and are busy preparing the course for the best possible playing conditions . We had a great spring and the course is in beautiful shape . I think all of the players will enjoy the challenge that Avondale offers ‘ , said General Manager Scott Larsen .
The P.E.I. Amateur Championship is managed by the Prince Edward Island Golf Association the governing body for golf in the province . The Championship has a long and prestigious history with many of the best players in the province having their names on the trophy including multiple winners like Dave Bowlan, Bob Dowling, Ron Garrett , Sherry White and Lorie Kane .
“ The Amateur Championship is the gold standard for amateur golf in the province . It attracts our best players and over the years has produced some outstanding golf . Avondale promises to be an exciting venue and we expect a full field of very talented players “ said the Association’s Executive Director Ron MacNeill.
