The Belvedere Golf Club in Charlottetown will be the site of the 2011 P.E.I. Amateur Championship July 2-3rd. The Island’s oldest course will host the prestigious tournament in conjunction with the Prince Edward Island Golf Association.
The Amateur Championship is the pinnacle for amateur players in the province and carries a long tradition. Over the years some of the provinces most prominent golfers have won the tournament.
“The Amateur is the center piece of our amateur golf season. It is always highly competitive and winning the Championship is often the highlight of an amateur career. Given what is at stake the tournament tests both the golfing and mental skills of our best golfers “said Golf Association Executive Director, Ron MacNeill.
What is at stake is not only the tournament trophy but tickets to 5 National Championships including the Canadian Men’s and Women’s Amateur Championship , the Senior Men’s and Women’s Championships as well as the Canadian Mid-Amateur Championship. While all P.E.I. team spots will be decided through the tournament players selected for the Men’s Amateur and Mid-Amateur will be determined through the season long Moosehead Lite Series however the Island Amateur is worth double qualifying points .
“The field is getting filled up quickly and we have a large contingent of top level players entered from out of province to try and win the prestigious title. If you’re a fan of great golf you should get out to Belvedere to watch the action “said MacNeill .
The 2011 Prince Edward Island Amateur Championship gets underway at 7 am on Saturday July 2nd at Belvedere .
